Porters- Women’s Backcountry Safety & Ski Touring Weekend Getaway

NEW 7-8 September 2013- Porters Ski Area, Canterbury

Who: Women new to the back country, those wanting a ground- up refresher or just some more experience with guides. Skiers, split-board snowboarders and telemarkers all welcome. Only 15 places available for the weekend, book in now!

Focus: Intro to back-country safety and touring. Practical useable skills, local information and guided backcountry travel. We want to get you out there moving in the terrain.

This is a women’s only weekend designed for women aged 18+ who enjoy their skiing and riding but want to have a little fun while learning backcountry safety and touring skills

The weekend will begin on Saturday the 7th Sept at Porters Café for an introduction and a complementary coffee provided by the Underground Coffee Company.

Coaching will run from 10am -12miday and 1pm – 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday with sessions on  transceiver use and safety gear, use of touring gear, route-finding,  safe zones and some basic avalanche knowledge. Lunch will be served in the café designed to keep energy levels high for this packed timetable.  The emphasis will be on having fun in a female only environment and coaching will be tailored to the group and to any individual goals you may have.

After a day of effort and reward, we’ll head on down to the lovely Porter Heights Ski Lodge where we will be greeted with a cold glass of Lindaur bubbles and some restorative stretching with our yoga expert Jill Midgley. Dinner will be served by the friendly Lodge staff with outdoor baths and chick flicks for some further après dinner R and R.

Sunday will start with an optional morning yoga stretch and coaching will resume at 10am.  The weekend will be wound up in style with a farewell  around and a look at some of the pictures and footage gathered from throughout the weekend.

Pre-registration is essential for the weekend which costs $349 and includes dinner, bed and breakfast at the Porter Heights Lodge, lunch and a coffee each day at the Porters Café and all activities listed below. Lift tickets are not included but special rates will apply for participants ($42 a day). We will need a minimum of 6 people to pre-register in order to run this weekend. Sat 7th Sept

  • 9:00am – Participants meet @ Porters Café.
  • 9:45am – Meet @ T-1 drive all ready to go.
  • 10:00am to 12:00pm – Morning skills session 1
  • 12:00pm to 1:00pm – Catered lunch @ Porters café.
  • 1:00pm to 3:00pm – Afternoon skills session 2
  • 3:00pm to 4:00pm – Free-skiing time or coffee time.
  • 4:15pm – Proceed to Porter Heights Alpine Lodge.
  • 4:30pm to 5:15pm – Pilates/Yoga/Stretching and Nutritional information
  • 5:15pm – Rooms allocated, showers/baths, etc.
  • 6:00pm – Bubbles…
  • 6:30pm (approx) – Dinner @ the lodge
  • 8:00pm til late – More bubbles and Chick Flicks

Sun 8th Sept

  • 7.45am to 8.30am- Yoga stretch class
  • 9:00am to 9:45am – optional warm up/free-skiing time
  • 9:45am – Meet @ T-1 drive all ready to go.
  • 10:00am to 12:00pm – Morning skills session 3
  • 12:00pm to 1:00pm – Catered lunch @ Porters café.
  • 1:00pm to 3:00pm – Afternoon skills session 4
  • 3:00pm to 4:00pm – Wind down and debrief @ Porters Café

Anna Keeling

Anna Keeling

Originally from Christchurch, Anna is a IFMGA mountain guide, based at Castle Hill Village and in Salt Lake City, Utah.  A winter specialist living far from the ocean, Anna constantly schemes getaways with her family to surf, rock climb and mountain bike in their limited warm seasons.  She is mother of six year old Obie and loves to write.

Karen Corcoran

Karen Corcoran

Based out of Christchurch, Karen is an  avalanche instructor and ski guide for various organisations and works for the Mountain Safety Council as the program manager for outdoor land safety. Ski touring and avalanche education are passions, sharing it with a group of like minded people, discussing the intricacies of terrain selection and avalanche phenomenon and poking around in the snow. Reading, drawing and making things out of recycled materials, ask her about recycled rimu floor boards and old plumbers copper pipes!

Paula Roberts

Paula RobertsBased in Hokitika, teaching Outdoor Education at Tai Poutini Polytech, rock climbing and mountaineering are her specialities. With a background in Mountain guiding and working on finishing her IFMGA guiding qualification, Paula was another natural choice to join Mission WOW. Paula works for Methven heliski and also do 2-3 guiding jobs at Mt Cook for Alpine Guides in the summer. She loves teaching people in the mountains and looks forward to meeting the mission WOW massive!


Looking forward to seeing all the ladies for some backcountry safety and fun at Porters.
