Mountain highs: SCOTT WOW Chamonix pushes women to new heights

SCOTT WOW has put the ‘wow’ into Chamonix on yet another level. Take sixteen women, three female guides and the latest range of SCOTT carbon touring skis. Add some fresh corn snow and the epic backcountry terrain off the Argentiere glacier. Shake it all up over the course of a gloriously sunny April weekend and the result is an epic 48 hours of unforgettable adventures, camaraderie and challenge.

Created as a way for women to exchange skills and knowledge via outdoor events, Mission WOW (Women of Winter/wheels/water) teamed up with SCOTT to offer coaching from BASS, a guided ski-tour and a touring skills drill, ranging from crevasse rescue technique to kick turns. SCOTT provided excellent super-light carbon touring skis for all the crew, plus a bunch of goodies to raffle.

The result was Mission WOW’s best weekend yet. Chamonix has a reputation as the hardcore skiing and mountaineering capital of Europe; an environment where risk pushes skills to the limit and adrenalin to the max. It’s easy to get ultra serious. But the organisers managed to achieve a perfect balance that saw the team kicking back with a beer on the refuge balcony in the afternoon and the next day donning skins and crampons for a four hour hike up to the Col d’Argentière to a lofty 3620m.

Back in the Rusticana bar on Sunday evening, the girls swapped ski-boots for flip flops and reflected on the weekend over beer and white wine. The sense of achievement was palpable. “I had no idea what I was in for…and that was what made it so exciting” says Jen, a last minute sign up and who started off-piste skiing for the first time this winter. “We entrusted our lives completely to a group of three inspiring guides on previously un-explored terrain and came out feeling on top of the world. Many of us pushed ourselves beyond what was comfortable and came out the other side stronger and more confident than before. Superb weekend. I’ll be back next year”.

Mission WOW’s next event is WOW ‘Wheels’ in Scotland, a women’s mountain bike coaching weekend for beginner/ intermediate riders. It is being held in Aberfeldy, Perthshire from 12-15th May 2011. For more info and to register online go to
